dependent sodium channel inactivation, and interference with intracellular events after binding of neurotransmitters to excitatory amino acid
receptors. One animal study showed that riluzole extended the survival time of transgenic animal models with ALS. 
3. A variety of animal models of excitatory nerve injury showed that Riluzole had neuroprotective effect. In vitro studies have shown that
liruzole can protect cultured rat motor neurons from excitatory toxic damage caused by glutamate and inhibit cortical cell death caused by
hypoxia.
