Tretoron acetate is a synthetic 19-norandrosterone, which has weak estrogen, androgen and progesterone activities, and is useful for the treatment of menopausal syndrome. In the existing technical method, lithium is used to reduce 7α-methylestradiol-3-methyl ether in liquid ammonia by the Brich reduction method to generate 3-methoxyestradiol-2,5(10) bis Ene. The 17-hydroxyl group of the product is oxidized to produce the corresponding ketone. This ketone reacts with potassium acetylene, and then is hydrolyzed with an aqueous solution of oxalic acid dissolved in methanol to produce the product 7-methondrin. There are several disadvantages to the above process. According to the disclosed method, two chromatography processes are required. Specifically, the product separated from the oxidation step needs to be purified by silica gel chromatography. In order to purify the product 7-methondrin, a second chromatographic process is required. 
In large-scale operations, the demand for chromatographic purification is not desirable. The reason is that only a relatively small amount of product can be purified at a time and a large amount of waste is generated.
